RUINS OF GEDI

RUINS OF GEDI

Departure from your accommodation to the archaeological site of Gedi, a short distance from Watamu. On arrival, you enter lush baobab vegetation welcomed by playful monkeys (you can bring bananas).

You visit the remains of the large water cisterns that supplied the city, the two concentric defensive walls, the great mosque, the sultan's palace with its tombs, and numerous residential buildings. The site museum holds extraordinary objects from around the world: Chinese vases, European coins, Ming dynasty porcelain and Venetian beads — testament to the flourishing trade of the Swahili coast.
